Purpose of Establishment

The Tobacco Research Institute in the Chungbuk National University was established in 1966 as the first law-designated institute in Korea in order to carry out the research on tobacco industry, R&D and supply. The Chungbuk province, a major breeding district of conventional leaf tobacco, contributes significantly to the farm income and national finance. The Institute, the leader of research on leaf tobacco and cigarette at home and abroad, develops the critical foundation technology which is necessary to grow, breed, process, produce and manage them, and contributes to the preservation of farmer income of leaf tobacco and the preservation of health of smokers through securing and maintaining the critical technology capability related to smoking sanitation.

Major Activities

  • Developing new tobacco varieties of better quality, high yield, and multiple disease resistance by utilizing conventional breeding methods, haploid breeding methods and biological methods.
  • Developing new genetic resources
  • Producing pure breed for the sake of research on heredity and development of tobacco
  • Promoting the quality of leaf tobacco by researching the features of leaf tobacco from each production field through -fermentation, aging and processing technologies
  • Extracting, separating and identifying diverse natural flavors from plants, and researching the possibility to develop them to artificial flavoring of tobacco
  • Analyzing and researching the composition of tobacco
  • Developing and establishing new analysis methods
  • Evaluating the last quality of tobacco
  • Securing new information of tobacco by analyzing and evaluating physical and chemical features of tobacco smoke
